Carl Laemmle

AMAZING STORY

Filmmakers Deborah F Blum and Warren I Blum tell the amazing story of Deborah’s ancestor Carl Laemmle, founder of Universal Studios, who spent the final years of his life rescuing Jews from the grips of NAZI Germany – often secretly.

What begins as a heartfelt mission to learn about “Uncle Carl,” transforms into a quest for lost history and the remnants of Jewish life in Southern Germany. Deborah locates three of the families rescued by Carl. Then, drawn by the History Museum of Baden Württemberg’s exhibition honoring Mr. Laemmle, Deborah takes Warren and their daughter, Esther, to Germany to explore the cities and towns these rescued families fled.

Along the way, Deborah encounters unexpected and remarkable connections to her personal and Jewish community heritage. She meets Germans working to make peace with the past and embrace the Jews of today.

She discovers the oil factory that her great-grandparents, Sigmund and Alice, were forced to sell to the NAZI’s for almost nothing. Told as an absorbing and relatable tale, with creative surprises and special effects along the way, Laemmle’s list takes us on a journey that humanizes history and is a gift to current and future generations.
